5 Ways To Keep Your Dog Fit

August 1, 2022
Does your canine buddy love to run and play? Or is your pooch more of a couch potato? No matter what end of the spectrum Fido falls under, it’s important to keep him active. A De Pere, WI vet offers some advice on this below.

Walks

When it comes to Fido’s fitness regimen, the daily walk is pretty much the standard workout. Most pups need at least a few strolls a day. As to how long and how vigorous those walks should be, that’s something to check with your vet on. Every pooch is different! Our other advice on this one? Don’t think of this as a chore. It’s a chance to hang out with your furry friend, and spend some quality time with him. Fresh air and sunshine will also do you good.

Sports

Some of our four-legged friends are very active and energetic. Others? Not so much. Fido may enjoy things like hiking, jogging, or swimming. However, these types of activities aren’t right for every dog. Ask your vet for specific advice.

Playtime

Playing is also a great way to keep Fido in shape. Dogs can burn off quite a few calories running and jumping! This is also a good way for you to bond with your canine companion.

Trickery

The ‘sneak it in’ method that many people use to increase their daily step counts can work for pets, too. Does your home have more than one level? Trick Fido into doing stair runs by playing Fetch at the top of the stairs. He’ll have to run upstairs to bring his toy back to you.

Easy Options

Does Fido have more energy than you do? Look for options that have your four-legged buddy running around while you stay relatively stable. Fetch is a good one for this. You can also get your playful pup a mechanical ball launcher or a remote-controlled toy.

Personal Trainer

Does your furry bff stay home alone while you go to work? Consider enrolling Fido in doggy daycare, or hiring a pet sitter for him. It’s definitely a good thing if your pooch can burn off some of his zoomies before you get home. That way, the two of you can relax and unwind together!
