Chinchilla Care 101

Are you looking for a pet that is small but super cute? A chinchilla may be the perfect fit for you! These little balls of fur are completely adorable, and make very fun pets. However, they do need proper care to stay healthy. A local Ledgeview, WI vet offers some advice on chinchilla care below.
Don’t Expect Quiet
Most pocket pets are rather quiet. That isn’t necessarily the case with these guys. Chinchillas are quite talkative, especially in the mornings and evenings. You may hear everything from adorable squeaks to barks!Buddies
Chinchillas get lonely by themselves, so they usually are happiest with roommates. Just be sure to only house same-sex chins together!Get A Great Cage
Your chinchillas will need a cage that offers plenty of room to play and climb. We recommend getting one with multiple levels. Ask your vet for specific advice, including size, substrate, accessories, and cage location.Be Cautious With Climate
Chinchillas are very sensitive to weather changes, and can overheat at only 80 degrees. Keep your pet in a room that has climate control and good ventilation. If it gets humid, you may need to add a dehumidifier: chinchillas are susceptible to getting fur fungus in damp conditions.Food
Chinchillas are well-suited to diets that are very high in fiber. They also have fairly sensitive stomachs: this is not a pet you can just give random leftovers to. Your little buddy can have pellets for their main meals, supplemented with hay and leafy greens. For treats, offer small amounts of raisins, or perhaps some blueberry leaves. Ask your vet for specific advice on this.Be Aware Of Sickness
Just like any other pet, chinchillas can be susceptible to illness and injury. Gastrointestinal issues are not uncommon with these guys. Dental issues are also quite prevalent. Watch for warning signs, such as diarrhea, reduced appetite, and weight loss. Call your vet immediately if you notice any of these.Provide Dust Baths
Chinchillas get excess dirt and oil out of their fur by using dust baths. You’ll need to provide your pet with their own little dust spa.TLC
